What is a Micro-Phlebectomy?
Micro-Phlebectomy, also known as ambulatory phlebectomy, is a minor surgical procedure which allows for the removal of large surface varicose veins through very small incisions that do not require stitches. The procedure is done in our office using local anesthetic.

How does the procedure work?
Micro-Phlebectomy is a minor surgical procedure which allows for the removal of large surface varicose veins through very small incisions that need no stitches. The procedure is done in our office using local anesthetic.
The procedure may take one to two hours depending on the number of veins to be removed. There is very little discomfort with the procedure and very little “down time” during your recovery. Many patients resume normal daily activities or go back to work the day following the procedure; although, some prefer to take an extra day off just to be sure they are fully recovered.
During the procedure, you will be resting comfortably on an exam table. After cleansing and anesthetizing the skin, minute skin incisions are made with an instrument that limits the size of the micro-incision to 1.5 millimeters. Another instrument is inserted under the skin to extract a length of the varicose vein through this micro-incision. Adhesive steri-strips are applied to the tiny incisions. No stitches are necessary! Special bandages are applied over each incision and the entire leg is wrapped in a snug compression wrap. You will walk out of the office with a healthier leg!
Aftercare for a Micro-Phlebectomy
The day following your procedure, you may remove the outer bandage. It is okay to shower because the steri-strips over the tiny incisions will be covered with a special plastic adhesive dressing. You will be given a compression stocking to apply for comfort and to aid in the healing process. We encourage you to resume normal activity as tolerated. Some patients require a prescription pain medication afterward, but most patients only need an over-the-counter pain reliever. A follow-up appointment is necessary after one week to remove your bandages and to assess the healing process.
